Oak vs. Hickory: Choosing the Best Burning Wood for East Tennessee Winters

The type of firewood you’re burning matters! Oak and hickory are both fantastic options for firewood and woodchip delivery in Knoxville, TN, but they have a few key differences. Here’s how these two different fuel sources differ to help you land on the right choice for your use.

Oak Firewood

Oak wood’s burn power comes in at about 24-26 BTUs, placing it lower than hickory. However, your oak logs will burn for much longer. White oak especially is known for a nice long burn time. Oak is much slower to season, with some suggesting 3+ years for the best results, though it can be used after a year. Burning oak doesn’t come with an overpowering odor, which makes it a popular choice.

Hickory Firewood

If we’re talking about pure burn power, hickory comes out on top with about 27-28 BTUs. And while it burns hotter than oak, it can burn out a bit faster. More heat means more frequent reloads for your fire. As far as seasoning goes, you can start to use your hickory after about 6 to 12 months, but if you want to get the best out of it, 2 years may make more sense. Hickory also has a much more pronounced odor than oak, with a slightly sweet, smoky smell.

Prepping for Wood Stove Season: How to Test If Your Firewood Is Fully Dry and Ready to Burn

Accidentally burning wood that isn’t properly seasoned comes with some big problems like creosote buildup, inefficient burning, and excessive smoke. Here’s how to tell if your wood is good to go for heating season before you throw it onto the fire:

  • Inspect coloring and bark: Properly seasoned wood will lose that green, fresh quality to it as it fades into its duller seasoned state. Bark will also start to naturally peel away.
  • Weight checks: If wood is nice and dry, it should weigh much less than fresh wood. If a piece feels heavier than the others, there’s probably still a good amount of moisture left inside it.
  • The knock test: Grab two pieces of wood you aren’t sure about and strike them against each other. If you hear a nice hollow-sounding clack, your wood is in good shape. A dull thud means things are still a bit too green.
  • Moisture meters: This is probably the most reliable testing method. Split a piece of wood and insert your moisture reader into exposed inner wood; if the moisture content is 20% or below, it’s most likely ready to burn.
